MUSICOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM

About

Scholarly community

Musicology is an academic as well as a social endeavour. Our staff collaborates with academic and societal partners in the organisation of prestigious festivals, symposia, and exhibitions throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Moreover, we regularly comment on music-related topics on Dutch national radio and television.
Examples are the Commemoration of Luigi Nono’s 90th birthday in the 2014 edition of the Holland Festival, and the organization of the STIMU Symposium of the Utrecht Early Music Festival in 2015. The department organizes a public lecture series (Colloquium Muziekwetenschap) every second Thursday of the month at 3.30pm at the University Theatre.
The musicology department has a long-standing exchange of students and lecturers with the Amsterdam Conservatory and the musicology department at Utrecht University. The department offers programmes at BA, MA, Research MA (MPhil) and PhD levels.

Location

Musicology’s lecture halls, staff offices and student societies are located in the University Theatre at Nieuwe Doelenstraat 16: a charming 17th-century building in Amsterdam’s historic city centre, a few minutes walk from the Mint Square. From 1635 to 1637, Rembrandt van Rijn and his wife lived in the building next door, currently ‘Grand CafĂ© de Jaren’. The famous ‘Hotel de l’Europe’ is situated right next to other side of the University Theatre.  The National Opera is at 5 minutes walk to the right, the University Library at 5 minutes walk to the left. The main university restaurant and the academic club are just across the street.
Inside our building, practice of and reflection on the performing arts go hand in hand. Dramaturgy students of the department of Theatre Studies often use the Theatre Hall for their rehearsals and shows.  Musicology students regularly practice on the rare seven-tone Balinese Semar Pagulingan gamelan orchestra in the basement of the building, viewing the Amstel river. The entrance hall is a hub for formal and less formal receptions. This turns the building into a lively and at times dazzling meeting place of intellectual and creative minds.
